Oil Spill – Who is Responsible?
BP is responsible for paying claims related for economic loss, property damage and injury related to the Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill. BP was leasing the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform from Transocean when the blast occurred. BP has said it will pay all legitimate claims related to the spill. The Coast Guard has officially named BP and Transocean Ltd., as responsible parties.
Two other companies also have faced questioning from congressional leaders about their roles in the incident. Halliburton was responsible for a critical part of the well drilling procedure roughly a day before the explosion occurred. Cameron is the manufacturer of the blowout preventer that apparently failed to worked properly and cut off the flow of oil when the explosion occurred. For that reason, some lawsuits have sought damages from multiple parties, alleging fault by each.
The unprecedented harm of the BP spill will continue to affect property, business and the environment for years to come. The Oil Spill Task Force, sponsored by Arnold & Itkin LLP, coordinates the financial, legal and investigative resources needed to represent the claims of businesses and individuals whose livelihoods and property are threatened by the BP oil spill.
