Has BP been paying claims? What type of claims has BP been paying?
BP has been making payments. But most payments are small, and the claims aren’t arriving fast enough for individuals and businesses whose livelihoods are threatened. BP says it hasn’t denied any of the 42,000 claims submitted and will pay all legitimate claims related to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
By the end of June, BP says it will have paid about $50 million to 7,900 individuals. However, a recent article in The Wall Street Journal noted BP had paid only 10 claims worth more than $5,000. Many individuals feel like they are getting the runaround when filing a claim and are getting bounced from one claims adjustor to another.
BP is responsible for paying claims for economic loss, property damage and bodily injury related to the Deepwater Horizon explosion and ongoing oil spill that is gushing more than 200,000 gallons of oil a day into the Gulf. President Obama has told BP not to nickel and dime people making claims, but they are doing so anyway. BP is processing claims slowly and still making skimpy payments when they get around to making them. More than half the 7,500 claims filed by individuals and businesses for loss of income had yet to be paid out by BP, according to data the state of Louisiana got from BP. That’s an outrageous way to treat hard working people who are trying to make a living and support families.
The unprecedented effects of the BP spill will continue to damage property, business and the environment in many ways for years to come. The Oil Spill Task Force, sponsored by Arnold & Itkin LLP, coordinates the financial, legal and investigative resources needed to represent the claims of businesses and individuals whose livelihoods and property are threatened by the BP oil spill.
