How long will it take to clean up the spill?
The effects of the BP oil spill will be felt on the Gulf coast for years. It’s fair to say that it will take a number of years to clean up the oil that has harmed marshes, beaches and wildlife over a wide area of the Gulf. The U.S. Coast Guard has said clean-up crews will be dealing with the oil spill for months.
Adding to the complexity of the cleanup, the oil slick has broken up into hundreds of thousands of patches across the surface of the Gulf and spread in many different directions. The spill, which is now estimated at 35,000 to 60,000 barrels a day, has expanded from Louisiana to the entire panhandle of Florida. Volunteers manning hundreds of boats equipped with skimmers are now involved in the cleanup.
The unprecedented harm of the BP spill will continue to affect property owners, business and individuals for years to come. The Oil Spill Task Force, sponsored by Arnold & Itkin LLP, coordinates the financial, legal and investigative resources needed to represent the claims of businesses and individuals whose livelihoods and property are threatened by the BP oil spill.
